Why is Your Pool Green?

Pools should not turn green due to algae growth on their own if all automated systems are operating as intended. That is why it is vitally important to understand how and why algae can grow because it can often signify an underlying fault that may still need to be diagnosed and repaired before any recovery treatments can commence. Otherwise you run the risk of your pool turning green again in a very short amount of time.

A green pool can be caused by a number of factors such as:

  • Stagnant Water - This is generally the most common cause for algae growth if your pool has been turned off and not circulating for some time. However if your system is operating it could indicate your circulation system may need to run for a longer period of time. This will achieve a higher turn over rate and filtration of your pools water and for the chemical dosing system to disperse enough disinfectant.

  • Chemical Imbalance - Low chlorine levels decrease your pools ability to disinfect and kill off dangerous and harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria and algae. Improper pH balance can also lead to this issue.

  • Phosphates - Algae thrives in the presence of phosphates. Leaves, dust, insects, fertilizers, skin shed by bathers, products like suntan lotions and moisturizers, hair care products and beverages etc. all introduce phosphates into your pool water. We are able to test for phosphate levels and remove if necessary.

  • Warm Weather - Algae thrives in warm, humid environments, so if you’ve recently experienced a change in your weather, you’ll need to be extra diligent about cleaning the pool.

  • Faulty Equipment - Your equipment could be malfunctioning or completely failed. We check the three main components of your pool system.

    • Circulation - ensure your pool pump is operational and the skimmer and pump baskets unclogged.

    • Filtration - ensure your filter pressure gauge is operating between its optimum range.

    • Dosing - check your pool dosing system is working by checking your chemical levels.

Due to the variety of possible causes which can lead to a green pool, it is important that every green pool we treat is individually assessed and quoted. A treatment plan specific to your pool will be developed in order to ensure your algae issues do not become a recurring problem.

Green Pool Recovery starts from $350.

Pricing varies depending on the severity of the green pool, size of pool and number of visits / labour.

Chemical usage charged sperately.

Our Treatment Process

  1. Water chemistry analysis and equipment diagnostic - To help determine why the algae was able to grow we test your pool water to see what your existing levels are (low chlorine, PH imbalance or high phosphates). We also check your pool equipment and automation settings for any malfunctions that may have contributed to your algal bloom. A filter clean or backwash is carried out prior to algae treatment commencing to enhance the filtration effect.

  2. Clearing the water - Large contaminants, debris and leaf litter are removed from the pool. Walls and steps are brushed to loosen and remove algae. A high potency flocculent may need to be added to clump debris together for easy vacuuming.

  3. Chemical balancing, pool shock and algae treatment - We add the necessary chemicals to balance your pool water chemistry and kill off the algae using elevated chlorine levels (pool shock process) and a high strength algaecide.

  4. Vacuum pool - Dead algae and other debris is removed from pool floor.

  5. Filter clean - Filter and pipework are cleansed of any residual algae.

Steps 3, 4 and 5 may need to be repeated over several visits.

  6.  Water chemistry analysis - Pool water is tested to ensure all levels are within normal range.
