Water Saving Tips!

Water Saving
POOL WATER CONSUMPTION

Water is a precious resource that has been running scarce in the last few years. The amount of water in a swimming pool can be deceiving- it may look like a lot, when actually it is not.

To put it in the right context, bathrooms use 25%, toilets 20% and gardens use 30% of the household water in Queensland per year. There are around 8000 pools sold in Queensland each year and filling these new pools takes 0.05% of the total amount of water used per year in Queensland. And remember, pools hold water, they don’t use water.

Bathrooms, kitchens and laundries have the highest level of water consumption in the average household. This water is only used once and then it’s discarded.

A pool is a water storage devise that can be used in many dire cases. The water in a pool goes through a sanitizing and filtering process, therefore it can be used again and again. The process of filtering and sanitizing does consume some water but not much.

In an emergency it is a ready supply to protect your family in the case of bushfires, even house fires.

Here are some tips to help make your water consumption even less than it is Do not over fill your pool; keep the level just above the half way mark of your skimmer box. If you under or over fill, your skimmer it will not be able to work efficiently.

Monitor the chemical balance in your pool as water that is contaminated will have to be wasted. That is, it will have to be replaced.

To reduce the need to backwash, clean the pool, skimmer and filter regularly.

Constant filter use- 8 hours a day in summer is necessary for pool health.

Even the smallest leak in your pool over time can waste a lot of water. A leak can come from your pipes or your pool equipment. If you suspect a leak contact your pool shop and they will give you some tips on how to test for it.

Check that all of your filters and pumps are in good working order because water can be wasted if they are not functioning efficiently.

If you have an abundance of rain, do not let your pool overflow. Monitor your pool and bucket out excess water on to plants etc.

Pool covers are a very efficient way to stop evaporation from your pool. They are very cost effective and will also keep heat in and debris out.

To reduce the amount of water used in your home, consider the following:

• Install (remove the “ing”) a modern dual flush toilet
• Put flow restrictors into the shower heads
• Keep your shower time to a minimum
• A bath uses a lot more water than a shower
• Use a front loading washing machine
• Update old dishwashers to a more water efficient one
• Change washers on dripping taps
• Don’t keep the water running while cleaning your teeth
• Don’t rinse and wash vegetables under running water – use a bowl
• Don’t rinse dishes under running water EVERYONE DESERVES TO ENJOY THE FINER THINGS IN LIFE.
